Community Works seeks nominations for 2014 grant recipients (due 9/25/13)

Past grant recipients have included agencies that work in hunger relief, affordable housing and homelessness, domestic violence and child abuse prevention, LGBTQ services, youth support and empowerment, environmental advocacy, and the local arts, among other areas. Our committee of Vassar employees and students will carefully consider each nomination, and we expect to select ten agencies for grants. Nominations must be received by Wednesday September 25, 2013


Vassar College's annual Community Works fundraising campaign for local non-profit organizations totals more than $100,000.

Vassar College employees and students combined to contribute $103,063 to the college's annual Community Works fundraising campaign for local non-profit organizations, the second highest total in the nine-year history of the campaign (http://communityworks.vassar.edu/). Ten organizations had been selected to receive equal grants from the money donated: Battered Women's Services, Celebrating Community, Children's Media Project, Circles of Planned Parenthood, Dutchess County Arts Council, Dutchess Outreach, The Living Room of Mental Health America of Dutchess County, Queens Galley, Real Skills Network, and Rural and Migrant Ministry.

HipHop 101, a Vassar student organization, and R.E.A.L. Skills, based at Poughkeepsie's Family Partnership Center, will host a day of music, poetry, film, and dance, commemorating Black heritage and the great accomplishments of people of color on Saturday, February 21. The Black Heritage Youth Celebration, free and open to the public, will be held in the Lateef Islam Auditorium at the Family Partnership Center (29 N. Hamilton St, Poughkeepsie, familypartnershipcenter.org), from 3:30-7:00pm. A Security Shuttle will be running from 3pm till 8pm, from Main Circle to the Family Partnership Center, to transport Vassar students to the event.
